https://www.discovermagazine.com/health/what-makes-a-morning-person-scientists-identify-new-genetics-behind-early-risersResearchers from other groups previously found 24 genetic variations that affect the daily rhythms of sleep and wakefulness. Altering some of these key genes in mice led to obesity and high blood sugar. Prior studies also reported a link between interrupting people’s sleeping habits and diseases such as type 2 diabetes and depression.n the new study, Jones and colleagues mined data from the genetics testing company 23andMe and the U.K. Biobank, a charity that follows the health of half a million participants and keeps a repository of blood, urine and saliva samples for research use. The scientists analyzed nearly 700,000 people’s genomes and their self-reported sleeping habits. All of the data came from folks with European ancestry.
Merry Morning Larkfound the 24 genetic variants previous studies had landed on, but they also identified another 327 places in the genome that affect when we like to go to and get up out of bed. Further analysis revealed being a morning person correlated with greater well-being and lowered risk for schizophrenia and depression, the researchers report today in the journal Nature Communications.
“The large number of people in our study means we havstudy means we have provided the strongest evidence to date that ‘night owls’ are at higher risk of mental health problems, such as schizophrenia and lower mental well-being,”

Night Owls seem to be smarter than early birds. NIGHT TYPES HAVE MORE GAME.Evening types weren’t just good at scoring on intelligence tests. They also proved to be prolific lovers—at least according to a 2012 paper in the same journal.Evening types were also more closely linked to infidelity; to take the bird analogy way too far: it seems owls, and not larks, breed cuckolds.Night owls profesional baseball player have a better average than morning players.5. OWLS ARE PARTIAL TO BAD HABITS—NAMELY, SMOKING AND DRINKING.Franklin’s adage about morning . LARKS ARE PERSISTENT, COOPERATIVE, AGREEABLE, CONSCIENTIOUS, AND PROACTIVE.THEY ALSO PROCRASTINATE LESS.Given that larks are generally more compliant and conformist than owls, it comes as little shock to learn that evening types seem to be worse procrastinators. MORNING TYPES MAY BE HAPPIER.This disconnect between conventional daytime expectations and nighttime preference might make life harder for owls in general. Social scientists call this outcome “social jetlag”: evening types that force themselves to wake up early and perform at their peak during the day might cause themselves some sleep loss and emotional distress. They might also be less happy as a result. Is it better to be a morning or night person?Although morning types may achieve more academically, night owls tend to perform better on measures of memory, processing speed and cognitive ability, even when they have to perform those tasks in the morning. Bob Ferguson, Attorney General of Washington State, wakes at 5 a.m. to make breakfast for his family“I’m a big believer that how your day starts is really important,” says Bob Ferguson, Attorney General of the state of Washington.
He wakes between 5 and 6:30 a.m. in order to carve out time for himself and his family.
“First, I have a little personal time — breakfast, coffee, the morning news,” he lists. Then he wakes his children and wife up and begins to make breakfast for the family to enjoy together.
Waking up early, he explains, is the only way for him to make sure that he has time for what matters most.
“It’s easy for meetings to go late at work, or for other events to come up, and I’m not always guaranteed much time with them later in the day, so I liked to lock in that morning time,” says Ferguson.

Brad Feld, Venture Capitalist at the Foundry Group, rises anywhere between 5:30 and 9 a.m. to ‘watch the day open up’Venture capitalist Brad Feld occasionally wakes up before 6 a.m., but also warns against wearing yourself too thin.
“Five years ago, I woke up at 5 every morning during the week, regardless of what time zone I was in,” he says. “Then I had a major depressive episode and decided to stop waking up with an alarm clock. I now get up whenever I wake up, which is anywhere between 5:30 and 9 a.m.”
Once he wakes up, Feld weighs himself, brushes his teeth and makes a cup of coffee. He then spends four minutes sitting with his wife and their dogs. “We just sit with our coffee, talk a little and watch the day open up and the birds sing.”
Caroline BurckleKristian Dowling/Getty Images4. Caroline Burckle, U.S. Olympic bronze medalist, rises at 5:30 to work out — without an alarmLike many of the other successful early-risers, Olympic swimmer Caroline Burckle wakes up early in order to work out. She wakes up around 5:30 a.m. and eats an energy bar before beginning a running interval, weight-training or swimming workout.
“I’ve had this routine my entire life,” she says. “Swimming bred me to wake up in the wee hours of the morning from a young age. I try to have two days a week to ‘sleep in’ to 6:30 or 7 a.m.”
What’s more, Burckle says her body will naturally wake up at this early time. “Typically, my internal clock wakes me up about four minutes before my alarm,” she says.
Getty Images5. General Stanley McChrystal, retired U.S. Army four-star general, wakes at 4 a.m. and doesn’t eat until dinnerGeneral Stanley McChrystal’s morning routine is regimented — to say the least. He wakes up around 4 a.m., shaves, exercises for an hour and a half, takes a four or five-minute shower and then goes to the office.
“When I was deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan, my morning routine was pretty much the same, except I would often break it into two parts,” he says.
Even though he spends over 90 minutes working out each morning, the General skips breakfast— and lunch. “I typically don’t eat anything until dinner,” he says. “It just makes me feel better, my body has gotten used to it, and so if I eat before dinner I get kind of sluggish.”

Mellody Hobson, President of Ariel Investments, rises at 4 a.m. to exercise and take a bathMellody Hobson, who serves as the President of Ariel Investments, has been waking up before 6 a.m. for more than two decades.
She wakes up between 4 and 5 a.m. and checks her phone for urgent emails and news alerts before exercising, which consists of running, lifting weights, swimming and cycling. She drinks two liters of water while exercising. When her work out is over, she has two hard-boiled eggs with coffee or tea followed by a bath.
“My bath time is essential personal time,” she explains. “I take a bath every morning, and use the time to decompress and relax. When I’m running outside on cold days in Chicago, I run faster on the return leg, thinking about my bath.”

“I’ve been getting up early for a few years,” she says. “For a long period of my life I stayed up very late, but I’ve since found my early morning routine to be the best way for me to sustain a high output and to feel balanced and happy throughout the day.”
McCloskey wakes up at 5:45 a.m. and does an hour of organizing. She exercises every day at 7 a.m., either with a personal trainer or in a exercise class like hot yoga, Pilates or TRX.
“Of course it wasn’t easy at first,” admits the CEO. “It was torture getting up that early; I was never naturally a morning person. But now it’s become routine, and I wake up pretty early on weekends too.”
Peter BalytaSource: YouTube/Texas Instruments8. Peter Balyta, President of Education Technology at Texas Instruments, wakes at 5:20 a.m. and does math while exercisingGrowing up in Canada, Peter Balyta would wake up early every morning for hockey practice. “I’m wired to be disciplined, especially when it comes to fitness,” he says.
Today, Balyta serves as the President of Education Technology for Texas Instruments. He says this discipline is a crucial part of his morning routine. Every day he wakes up at 5:20 a.m., eats a banana, drinks a glass of water, scans his email and then hits the gym.
“We start with a warm-up of light stretching, followed by a high-intensity workout of the day, involving constantly changing movements,” he says.
While he is exercising he does mental math to wake up both his mind as well as his body. “Not to geek out too much, but I use simple math to determine transition times and physics to determine how to leverage my body around a barbell,” he says.
MIT President L. Rafael ReifScott Eisen/Getty Images9. L. Rafael Reif, President of M.I.T., gets up at 5 a.m. and rarely skips breakfastThe President of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, L. Rafael Reif, says that maintaining his early morning routine is essential to staying productive and happy.
“I set my alarm for 6 a.m. but I rarely get to hear it — I almost always wake up around 5 or 5:30 on my own,” he says.
The first thing he does is checks his phone. “I’ll try to respond to any urgent messages right away, then I take my phone or tablet to breakfast and read the news while I eat,” says Reif. “After breakfast, I shower, get dressed, and then I’m off to my first meeting of the day.”
He uses breakfast as a time to read and connect with his wife.
“If I don’t have a chance to check my email, I worry about what I’m missing. Even when I do check my email, I still worry,” he says. “And it happens rarely, but if I miss breakfast for some reason, it throws me off for the whole day. The word ‘grumpy’ comes to mind.”
Scott AdamsBob Riha, Jr./Getty Images10. Scott Adams, creator of “Dilbert,” wakes at 4 a.m. to be his ‘smartest’While Scott Adams, creator of the “Dilbert” comic strip does allow for some flexibility, he always wakes up as early as he can — typically between 4 and 6 a.m.
“Some people are just morning people, myself included, so for me it is easy to get up in the morning, that’s the best part of my day,” says Adams. “Typically speaking I’m happiest, smartest, most creative and most optimistic between the hours of 4 and 8 a.m.”
As soon as he wakes up he goes to work in order to take advantage of these creative early hours.
Unlike other early risers, however, Adams does not go to sleep particularly early, usually around 11 p.m., and he admits that being sleep deprived can take its toll.
“Being tired can be dangerous,” he says. “It takes a pretty predictable chunk off your IQ.”

https://www.insider.com/benefits-of-being-a-night-owl-2017-6Night owls might be more creative and more intelligent than early birds, with increased mental stamina late in the day. They may get a burst of late-night physical strength and could also be better at baseball — at least according to a study of MLB players. An earlier study of US Air Force recruits found that night owls scored higher on intelligence tests, and in 2014, a different group of researchers found that night owls in an MBA program also got higher test scores. (Take that, cheery morning people!)
This comes from a study of a tiny, super-selective population, but it's still fascinating. Back in 2011 researchers looked at the batting averages of 16 Major League Baseball Players over two full seasons. The players also completed a questionnaire that determined whether they were a morning or evening person.
Better at BaseballThe results showed that, in games starting before 2 p.m. the morning people did better, posting a batting average of .267, compared to .259 for the evening people. But when in games starting after 8 p.m., the evening people had a much bigger advantage: At that time of night they achieved a batting average of .306, compared to the morning people who batted .252. In other words: When each group of batters got the chance to perform at their preferred time of day, the night owls blew the early birds out of the water. You might say the night owls hit it out of the park (wink, wink).

Feldman and published in the most recent Journal of Basic and Applied Social Psychology. The study, published in the journal's June issue, found that 60 percent of people lied at least once during a 10-minute conversation and told an average of two to three lies.

Prolific liars are those who report that they tell five or more lies per day. Prolific liars tend to be younger, male and have higher occupational statuses. They are likely to lie the most to their partners and children. They are more likely than the average person to believe that lying is acceptable in some circumstances. They are less likely to lie because of concern for others and more likely to lie for their own self-interest, such as to protect a secret.Prolific liars tell five and a half lies for every one white lie told by an average person.Liars Struggle to Answer Why QuestionsIf you suspect someone might be lying to you but aren’t sure, an easy way to find out is to ask them ‘Why?’ questions. It is much more difficult for people to lie about why they did something or why something happened than it is for them to lie about basic facts. If someone struggles to explain their intentions, it’s a major red flag that they are lying.

https://www.livescience.com/63310-psychedelic-drugs-mental-health-disorders.htmlAyahuascaAyahuasca is a drink made from plants that grow in the Amazon and that indigenous people in South America have traditionally used for spiritual ceremonies. It contains the hallucinogen N,N-dimethyltryptamine, or DMT, as well as compounds that may have anti-depressive effects.
Indeed, preliminary research suggests that the drug may benefit people who have depression. In a small study in Brazil, researchers looked at the effects of ayahuasca in six people with depression who'd never taken the drug before. Within hours of taking ayahuasca, patients saw improvements in their symptoms, which lasted for the three-week study period, according to a 2015 article in the journal Nature. The researchers are now conducting larger studies of the drug.
As for how ayahuasca and other drugs help with psychiatric conditions, there are likely many factors involved. But one study suggests that feelings of spirituality, and how they related to people's ability to regulate their emotions, may play a role.
That study, also presented at the symposium, involved 159 participants who reported that they had taken a hallucinogen at some point in their lives, such as psilocybin, ayahuasca or LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide).
Participants also reported on their levels of spirituality and their relationships with their emotions. The study found that use of hallucinogens was linked with increased levels of spirituality, which in turn was tied to improved emotional stability and fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression.
"This study reinforces the need for the psychological field to consider a larger role for spirituality in the context of mainstream treatment, because spiritual growth and a connection to something greater than the self can be fostered," said Adele Lafrance, an associate professor of psychology at Laurentian University in Ontario, who presented the findings at the symposium.
Original article on Live Science. Its potential to wash out old trauma from the psyche is why some see it as a powerful treatment for PTSD and drug addiction. While ayahuasca trips often bring up repressed, sometimes traumatic memories, they don’t always retraumatize the person in the way that consciously talking about it could, research shows. Some researchers believe it’s because the medicinal plants lower the person’s defenses. So, instead of facing the traumatic memory with fear, anxiety, and stress, the person can see it for the first time without the emotional charge

Despite reports dubbing it the "hottest new psychedelic" among trend setters in the United States, Davis's research has found that the drug is still rare, and most people are using it for psycho-spiritual endeavors rather than for recreation. Typically, he says, it is used in a ritualistic setting with a specific process similar to what might be done during an ayahuasca ritual. In a survey study of 362 adults, Davis found that when administered in a ceremonial group setting with a knowledgeable facilitator, approximately 80 percent of people said that their depression or anxiety is improved following the use of 5-MeO-DMT.

Ways to cleanse your homes of Negative Energyhttps://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-4398/Easy-Way-to-Cleanse-Your-Home-of-Negative-Energy.html
1. Set a new intention for your home.Form follows thought. Before you do anything else, set a specific intention for your home. What do you want your space to help you release? How do you want your home to feel? For example, you could say: "My intention is to cleanse negative energy from my home so I am focused and productive" or "My intention is to release my ex's energy and feel peaceful again." Speak your intention out loud to set the shifts in motion.
2. Try sage smudging.People all over the world burn herbs to clear negative energy, and one of the most widely used is sage. This herb is harvested and dried—often in a bundle—then burned for its cleansing smoke. To smudge sage at home, place your dried sage in a fire-safe container and light until you see a flame. Blow it out. The orange embers will continue to burn. Fan the embers while spreading smoke thoroughly into every crevice of each room. Note: If you have asthma or are sensitive to smoke, skip this one and clear your space using plants instead (see tip No. 8).3. Strategically place your crystals.Crystals are gifts from the earth that carry various beneficial vibrational properties. Two stones to place around your home to clear negative energy are black tourmaline and hematite.
4. Make noise as you walk through your space. The sound of drums, gongs, and even clapping hands can help break up negative energy. For an at-home sound ritual, start at your front door and move clockwise through the inner perimeter of your home, playing an instrument (or clapping) toward the walls, until you've made a full loop.5. Burn incense.Palo Santo is a type of fragrant wood that's native to South America and can be burned as incense. It is thought to be a vigorous energy cleanser; just light one end of a stick and spread the smoke as you would with smudging.
6. Bring your salt out of the kitchen.Salt has been used for sterilizing everything from cutting boards to wounds (ouch!), and it clears negative energy too. Here are some ways you can utilize it throughout your home:
Dissolve sea salt in a spray bottle filled with water and mist the air of every room.Place a thin line of sea salt in front of your home's entrance or around the perimeter of your property.Include a small dish of salt on your altar.Dissolve salt in water used to clean surfaces and floors.Use Himalayan salt lamps.7. Give the whole place a fresh, lemony scent. There's a reason so many cleaning products are lemon-scented. The smell of lemon is naturally invigorating and uplifting. Here are some unexpected ways to use it at home:
Simmer lemon peels in water and let the steam scent your space.Leave small dishes filled with fresh lemon slices around your home.Put lemon essential oils in your diffuser.8. Fill your space with the smell of plants.Lemon isn't the only scent that can give your space a quick boost: Sage, lavender, and frankincense essential oils can also be great at dissolving negativity. You can either place them in your diffuser or fill a clean spray bottle with equal parts witch hazel and distilled water, add 20-30 drops of essential oil of choice, shake, and mist your living space. Or opt for fresh scents instead and place fragrant plants like peace lilies, aloe vera, or English ivy in vases around your home.9. Harness the power of imagination.Imagine a glowing, golden light inside your heart space. As you breathe in deeply, expand that light until it's outside of your body. Now spread that light into your living space, with the intention that all of the energetic congestion clears out.
10. Clear out your clutter.Physical dirt and clutter can make a space feel unwelcoming. Keeping a clean, clutter-free home means negative energy won't have a place to congregate. Last but not least, open your windows! Allowing fresh air in also lets negative energy out. Make energetically cleansing your space a regular part of your routine. Within a short time, you will feel lighter, brighter, and better able to take inspired action in your life.
Smudging 101https://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-17875/a-sage-smudging-ritual-to-cleanse-your-aura-clear-your-space.htmlThe ancient practice of burning dried sage for cleansing has roots in Native American tradition. Today, science is catching up to sage's potential as a healing herb. Sage belongs to the Salvia plant family and is derived from the Latin word salvere, which means "to heal." "Aside from the metaphysical uses of smudging, research is showing that sage can also be used to benefit physical, mental, and emotional well-being," says Reshma Patel, PA-C, MMS, CEO and founder of Ananda Integrative Medicine. She points to a number of studies that have shown that medicinal smokes such as sage have powerful antimicrobial and antibacterial qualities, can improve mood and cognition, can serve as an insect repellent, and can even help with sleep quality by easing insomnia.Traditionally, people use an abalone shell to hold the sage and then use a feather to fan and spread the smoke around the space once the sage is burning," says Colleen McCann, a shamanic energy practitioner. "If you are just getting started, you can find a sage kit online or in your local metaphysical shop." (If you're a bit sensitive to smoke or can't have smoke in a specific space like your office, there are plenty of cleansing smudge mist options available these days too.)1. Gather your tools and have an exit strategy.First and foremost, ensure you have all the above-mentioned tools handy and that you've opened a door or window before lighting up. After all, that negativity (not to mention smoke) needs to have a pathway to get out.
2. Set your intention and say a mantra.Intentions are central to the practice of smudging, so take a moment before you light the sage to determine what exactly it is that you're trying to purify or release from your space. Then, decide on a mantra to repeat while saging that encapsulates this intention. It can be something you come up with on your own, or for a little guidance, Giselle Wasfie, doctor of Chinese medicine and founder of REMIX Acupuncture & Integrative Health, suggests, "I let go and release what no longer serves me."
3. Light up.Once you're ready, hold the sage at a 45-degree angle, light it using your match or candle, and let it burn for about 20 seconds. After that, gently blow out the flame so you see orange embers on one end. The smoke should now billow up.
4. Slowly walk around your space.Slowly walk around your space and allow the smoke to waft around. Guide the smoke—and the bad energy—toward the open windows or a door, so it can escape. "Give special attention to areas in front of mirrors, in corners, and in spaces like foyers, hallways, and doorways," Wasfie recommends. "I'm also a big fan of saging technology like our phones or laptops. I usually hold the sage wand underneath them and then wave it around them."
5. Be safe!Sage burning 101: Always stay present! If you see little embers fall on the ground, tamp them out immediately. Never let the burning sage stay unattended for any reason. Also, take care not to inhale too much of the smoke. "Although saging is a great way to clear your apartment or office of stagnant and possibly negative energy, it is best not to inhale it directly," says licensed acupuncturist and certified herbalist Irina Logman, L.Ac., MSTOM. "Lungs are a delicate organ, and any type of smoke can be drying and irritating to the mucosa."
6. Extinguish your sage.Once you're ready to extinguish a sage smudge stick, press the burning tip firmly into your fireproof vessel, dirt, or sand until the smoke no longer rises. Pro tip: Don't get it wet! "Don't use water to extinguish the hot embers—it will ruin the tip of the stick and make it harder to light next time. When you are done using the smudge stick, you can keep it in a vessel until you are ready to use it again," says McCann.
We recommend not doing this by yourself, it is better if you can do this with another person or persons. We also recommend using anointing oil and while walking around your home touch with your finger any doorframes, window frames, occupants, mirrors and objects as needed. (Avoid using any fragrance oils or essential oils on pets). People have often asked us about the use of oil so I approached Father God on this matter and this is what I believe He spoke:- "Olive oil in the Bible represents the Holy Spirit. The oil is a symbol/token and represents my power and anointing. Wherever you place the oil is a prophetic act of inviting My presence. Using the oil signifies a belief in Me and My power to heal and to touch lives. As long as the oil is used as a token/symbol of My presence and does not replace Me that is fine. As long as one does not look to, or rely upon the oil instead of Me that is fine. It is not the symbols that carry the power it is the belief in Me on behalf of the symbols that carry the power".
https://www.gotquestions.org/Bible-smudging.htmlSome people also smudge themselves by directing the smoke around their body and through their aura. This is thought to cleanse them of negative or stagnant energy. Auras are the occult concept that human beings and other living things emanate subtle energy fields or fields of light, surrounding us like bubbles of power.
There is nothing inherently wrong with burning incense or using herbs to beautify the fragrance of one’s home, but that is not what smudging is about. As with all New Age teachings, there is no biblical basis for belief in smudge sticks, auras, vibes, or household energy. The Bible tells us that God protects His children from evil (2 Thessalonians 3:3). We have no need to smudge; in fact, smudging is sin. We do not trust in pagan rituals but in God our Savior. God is the source of life, of all that is good and true. God promises, “The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore” (Psalm 121:7–8). He will provide the strength and peace we need to make it through any test.
The devil cannot be made to flee with smoldering sage; our refuge is the Lord alone (see Psalm 4:8). God provides us with powerful tools to fend off the enemy’s spiritual attacks (Ephesians 6:10–17). Smudging is not one of those tools.

In the United States, the prevalence of obesity among boys was about 14 percent in 2000 and 18 percent in 2008, and is projected to be about 27 percent in 2020.Children become overweight and obese for a variety of reasons. The most common causes are genetic factors, lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating patterns, or a combination of these factors. Only in rare cases is being overweight caused by a medical condition such as a hormonal problem

https://www.who.int/end-childhood-obesity/facts/en/Commission on Ending Childhood ObesityCommission on Ending Childhood Obesity (ECHO)About the work of the CommissionWorking GroupsNewsInformation resourcesFacts and figures on childhood obesityKey factsThe number of overweight or obese infants and young children (aged 0 to 5 years) increased from 32 million globally in 1990 to 41 million in 2016. In the WHO African Region alone the number of overweight or obese children increased from 4 to 9 million over the same period.
The vast majority of overweight or obese children live in developing countries, where the rate of increase has been more than 30% higher than that of developed countries.
Without intervention, obese infants and young children will likely continue to be obese during childhood, adolescence and adulthood.
Obesity in childhood is associated with a wide range of serious health complications and an increased risk of premature onset of illnesses, including diabetes and heart disease.
Exclusive breastfeeding from birth to 6 months of age is an important way to help prevent infants from becoming overweight or obese.
Consequences of obesity in childhoodObese children are more likely to develop a variety of health problems as adults. These include:
cardiovascular diseaseinsulin resistance (often an early sign of impending diabetes)musculoskeletal disorders (especially osteoarthritis - a highly disabling degenerative disease of the joints)some cancers (endometrial, breast and colon)disability.Contributors to obesity in infants and childrenEvery aspect of the environment in which children are conceived, born and raised can contribute to their risk of becoming overweight or obese. During pregnancy, gestational diabetes (a form of diabetes occurring during pregnancy) may result in increased birth weight and risk of obesity later in life.
Choosing healthy foods for infants and young children is critical because food preferences are established in early life. Feeding infants energy-dense, high-fat, high-sugar and high-salt foods is a key contributor to childhood obesity.
Lack of information about sound approaches to nutrition and poor availability and affordability of healthy foods contribute to the problem. The aggressive marketing of energy-dense foods and beverages to children and families further exacerbate it. In some societies, longstanding cultural norms (such as the widespread belief that a fat baby is a healthy baby) may encourage families to over-feed their children.
The increasingly urbanized and digitalized world offers fewer opportunities for physical activity through healthy play. Being overweight or obese further reduces children’s opportunities to participate in group physical activities. They then become even less physically active, which makes them likely to become more overweight over time.
Prevention of childhood obesityOverweight and obesity are largely preventable. Supportive policies, environments, schools and communities are fundamental in shaping parents’ and children’s choices, making the healthier choice of foods and regular physical activity the easiest choice (accessible, available and affordable), and therefore preventing obesity.
For infants and young children, WHO recommends:early initiation of breastfeeding within one hour of birth;exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life; andthe introduction of nutritionally-adequate and safe complementary (solid) foods at 6 months together with continued breastfeeding up to two years of age or beyond.Complementary foods should be rich in nutrients and given in adequate amounts. At six months, caregivers should introduce foods in small amounts and gradually increase the quantity as the child gets older. Young children should receive a variety of foods including meat, poultry, fish or eggs as often as possible. Foods for the baby can be specially prepared or modified from family meals. Complementary foods high in fats, sugar and salt should be avoided.
School-aged children and adolescents should:limit energy intake from total fats and sugars;increase consumption of fruit and vegetables, as well as legumes, whole grains and nuts;engage in regular physical activity (60 minutes a day). The food industry can play a significant role in reducing childhood obesity by:reducing the fat, sugar and salt content of complementary foods and other processed foods;ensuring that healthy and nutritious choices are available and affordable to all consumers;practicing responsible marketing especially those aimed at children and teenagers.

Wasted food is the single largest category of material placed in municipal landfills and represents nourishment that could have helped feed families in need. Additionally, water, energy, and labor used to produce wasted food could have been employed for other purposes. Effectively reducing food waste will require cooperation among federal, state, tribal and local governments, faith-based institutions, environmental organizations, communities, and the entire supply chain.
https://www.rivercottage.net/news/top-five-most-wasted-foods-and-ways-to-save-them-from-the-binHere's our list of the top five most wasted foods and how to use them up.#1 Bread. Over 240 million slices of bread are chucked away every year. ...#2 Milk. Around 5.9 million glasses of milk are poured down the sink every year, but it's so easy to use it up. ...#3 Potatoes. ...#4 Cheese. ...#5 Apples.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) signed a joint agency formal agreement under the Winning on Reducing Food Waste Initiative. The agreement is aimed at improving coordination and communication across federal agencies attempting to better educate Americans on the impacts and importance of reducing food loss and waste.
On April 9, 2019, USDA, EPA, and FDA signed a formal agreement with ReFED, Inc. to collaborate on efforts to reduce food waste in the United States. The agencies and ReFED agreed to develop approaches for measuring the success of food waste strategies, advance data collection and measurement efforts, and to participate as appropriate in the Further with Food: Center for Food Loss and Waste partnership, among other activities.
On October 30, 2019, USDA, EPA, and FDA announced a new partnership with the Food Waste Reduction Alliance (FWRA). Through a Memorandum of Understanding, USDA, EPA and the FDA will formalize industry education and outreach efforts with the Grocery Manufacturers Association, the Food Marketing Institute, and the National Restaurant Association, the three founding partners of the FWRA.

https://www.qsrmagazine.com/outside-insights/food-waste-2020-what-restaurant-tech-trends-watchHow restauraunts deal with wasteAccording to Supply Chain Dive, using this technology could reduce food waste by at least 5 percent within the supply chain. In 2020, restaurant owners can expect that partners may be investing into shelf life-extending technology.
Another trend to watch is technology to deal with food waste such as the use of food waste digesters and dehydrators. More and more facilities are incorporating these machines into their restaurant to minimize the amount of food waste that gets sent to landfills. Digesters first grind up food waste material before breaking it up using a biological additive to accelerate decomposition. Digesters turn organic waste into value-added products. Dehydrators, on the other hand, reduce the weight and volume of the food waste prior to hauling, using a mechanical and thermal approach. Digesters and dehydrators can both handle a variety of volumes of food waste, so be sure to select a model that best matches your restaurant’s needs.
Lastly, within commercial kitchens, several startups have created solutions that target food waste as it is being created. Recently, commercial kitchen equipment has become more efficient and technologically advanced. Some of the advancements in the last few years have helped reduce downtime, energy efficiency and onboarding. As a result, 2020 should see a huge wave of integration of these technologies. For example, Winnow, an AI-powered smart waste bin company, recently raised $12M to improve its technology and focus on product development. According to the brand, kitchens using Winnow tend to see a 40 to 70 percent reduction in food waste within six to 12 months, driving food cost savings between two and eight percent in total. Similar technologies claim to pass the human level accuracy when it comes to waste sorting. In 2020, expect to see this type of technology becoming smarter and being widely implemented within the industry.
